This season, we reflect on the last five incredible decades of Chicago Opera Theater. Our 50th Anniversary Celebration begins in October with a one-night only, concert performance of David T. Little's Soldier Songs at Epiphany Center for the Arts, featuring legendary baritone David Adam Moore. The long-awaited Chicago premiere of Shostakovich's The Nose takes the stage in December at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance. In January, we move to the Studebaker Theater to present Huang Ruo’s Book of Mountains and Seas, a visually stunning production in collaboration with the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival and Beth Morrison Projects. In April, at the Epiphany Center for the Arts, we present Vanguard composer Gillian Rae Perry and librettist Marcus Amaker's The Weight of Light, the fifth concert premiere commissioned through COT's Vanguard Initiative. We then return to the Studebaker Theater in May to conclude our season with the world premiere tour presentation of Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer's Before It All Goes Dark, based on a story by Chicago's own Howard Reich, commissioned and presented by Music of Remembrance.

WE BELIEVE OPERA IS A LIVING ART FORM.

Chicago Opera Theater is a company laser-focused on living its values:

• expanding the tradition of opera as a living art form
• producing high-quality works new to Chicago audiences
• identifying top-tier casts and creative talent
following through on commitments to equity and access – behind the scenes, on the stage, and in the audience

Since its founding in 1973, in a city where storefront theaters and global icons thrive side by side, COT has grown from a grassroots, community-based company to a national leader in an increasingly vibrant, diverse, and forward-looking art form. COT has staged over 150 operas, including 78 Chicago premieres and 45 operas by American composers.

In addition to its mainstage season, COT is devoted to the development and production of new opera in the United States through its Vanguard Initiative, launched in 2018. The Vanguard Initiative trains emerging opera composers, invests time and talent in new opera at various stages of the creative process, and opens up opportunities for Chicago audiences to become part of the development of new work, in dialogue with the creators themselves.
