Development Associate for Foundation Relations
Position Description:
The Development Associate for Foundation Relations (DAFR) will lead and implement all foundation, government and corporate funding for Chicago Opera Theater. This position requires writing proposals, managing relationships and identifying opportunities for new funding. This individual must be an energetic, organized individual who will be able to develop and cultivate partnerships with key members of the philanthropic community, staff, volunteers, board members and donors.
The DAFR will be responsible for the management, administration and solicitation of all institutional giving. The DAFR will play a role as key team member of 3 Development staff to support the overall goals and initiatives of the Development Department.
The DAFR acts in coordination with the Director of Development to advance ongoing campaigns and new initiatives. This position reports to the Director of Development.
Responsibilities Include:
- Write all proposals and reports for COT’s grant program, meeting all deadlines.
- Develop and maintain moves management donor system and metrics to track stewardship and revenue goals.
- Develop and implement fund raising initiatives for foundations, corporations and government, including researching, tracking and oversight of grant opportunities, proposals inquiries and reports.
- Develop and maintain relationships with the funding community. Identify prospects for new support. Maintain current foundation donors.
- Maintain current knowledge of all COT program initiatives.
- Assist in supervision of Development Intern and Special Event Intern.
- Through these activities demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Chicago Opera Theater’s mission to produce rarely performed opera; to practice these values in relations with donors and internal and external customers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Excellent written and verbal skills are necessary. Strong administrative and organizational skills, including budgeting and reporting, are essential. Must have the ability to work without close supervision. Organization and maintenance of donor information is integral to the success of this position. Thorough knowledge of MS Office. Tessitura database and planned giving experience is a plus. Occasional nights and weekends required.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s or advanced degree a plus. 1-3 years of experience in grant writing. Direct experience writing grant proposals and reports, prospect research, and maintaining pro-active relationships with program officers and foundation staff.
Compensation: Salary is in the mid to high 30K range and is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
