A children’s opera in two acts

Music by Hans Krása
Libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister
New English version by Tony Kushner
Conceived and Designed by Maurice Sendak
Originally performed by youth living in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, Brundibár tells of two children, Aninka and Pepícek, who must procure milk for their sick mother. This short opera has a story and music that are accessible enough for a child audience, but layered and textured with meaning from its historical origins, making it a significant experience for an adult audience as well.

An opera in one act

Music by Bohuslav Martin
Libretto by Bohuslav Martin
Based on Václav Kliment Klicpera’s play
New English adaptation by Tony Kushner
Conceived and Designed by Maurice Sendak

Five characters, trapped between the enemy sentry and the friendly sentry on a bridge in an unidentified war, play out their interlinked personal dramas. This witty, optimistic work considers the emotions that come with being caught in the middle, between borders and affections.
