DON GIOVANNI
Readings
- David Cairns. Mozart and His Operas (University of California Press: 2006) – Cairns is one of the greatest writers on Berlioz, and now takes his hand at Mozart.
- Jane Glover. Mozart's Women: His Family, His Friends, His Music (Harper Perennial: 2006) – Back this season to conduct Don Giovanni, Jane Glover, writes about the women in Mozart’s life – his sister, his wife, singers in his operas – and how they influenced his music.
- Nino Pirrotta. Don Giovanni's Progress: A Rake Goes to the Opera, tr. Harris Saunders (Marsilio: New York: 1994) – In contrast to Abrams account of Don Giovanni (next in this reading list), Pirrotta presents a complex and robust exploration of the legend of Don Giovanni culminating a scene-by-scene analysis of Mozart’s Don Giovanni.
- Douglas Carlton Abrams. The Lost Diary of Don Juan : An Account of the True Arts of Passion and the Perilous Adventure of Love (Atria: 2007) – This fun read might make even the most well versed opera aficionado take a moment to reassess what might be going on in Don Giovanni’s head. This proposes that Don Juan actually does have a heart and maybe even a soul.
- Don Giovanni or Libretti of Mozart’s Completed Operas, Vol. 1 – Opera libretti for Don Giovanni
Recordings
- Mozart - Don Giovanni / Furtwangler (1954) – Brilliant record of Furtwangler on the podium and a stellar cast from 1953 including Otto Edelmann, Elisabeth Grümmer, Cesare Siepi, Dezsõ Ernster (DVD)
