AN OPERATIC GHOST STORY…
Closing COT's Festival Season is the Chicago premiere of Benjamin Britten's Owen Wingrave. Like Verdi, Mozart, and Wagner before him, Britten brings an extraordinary sense of theatre to his musical treatment of complex subjects. A perfect example of this is his penultimate opera Owen Wingrave, a haunting story about the brutal conflict between a military family and their pacifist son.
The dynamic duo of director Ken Cazan and designer Peter Harrison bring their remarkable creativity to Owen Wingrave as they did to COT's past productions of Death in Venice and Duke Bluebeard's Castle. Steuart Bedford, a close Britten collaborator and the conductor of the first staged performances of Owen Wingrave, make his Chicago debut. Sung in English with English supertitles.
Approximate running time: 2hrs including one intermission.
All performances held at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park.
